Dowel and fringe

After blocking and drying, place the straight foundation edge below the dowel. Sew a loop through a secure foundation position and around the rod at each of the 50 positions. Distribute the fabric evenly without stretching. The side row ends stay free. Secure and weave both sewing tails into the panel.

For fringe, cut 40 strands: two strands for each of the 20 bottom stitches. Each strand needs twice the desired hanging length plus an allowance for the knot and trimming. For example, start with 28 cm strands for roughly 12 cm fringe and test one knot before cutting the rest; thick yarn consumes more length.

Fold two strands together in half. Pull their folded loop through one bottom stitch, pass all four loose ends through that loop and snug the knot gently. Repeat once per bottom stitch. Hang the panel before trimming; keep the flat lower edge visible or trim the fringe itself into a shallow V. A V-shaped fringe does not change the crocheted panel's flat-ended taper.

Tips & troubleshooting

Count spaces as well as stitches

The open row has 24 ch-1 spaces and 26 sc, giving 50 stitch positions. In the following solid row, work one sc into each space and each sc; do not crochet into both a space and the chain above it.

Check the taper at each pair of rows

Each decrease row removes two stitches; its following even row preserves that count. Record each pair so the fifteenth decrease row ends at 20 stitches, with the 20-stitch bottom centered beneath the original panel.

Fit the panel to the dowel

Measure the blocked top edge against the dowel before attaching it. Leave room at both ends for the hanging cord; do not bunch an overly wide panel onto the rod and expect it to hang flat.
